Thoughts from the Manager - Worthing Programme
Good evening everyone and welcome back to Homelands for tonight's Ryman League clash against Worthing. Firstly I would like to welcome Simon Colbran and his players to Ashford. It was immensely frustrating to see our game against Whitstable called off on Monday – it was a game we really to get out there and play as we thought we could get a valuable three points, but again, like throughout the season we haven’t had any luck with rain and the referee had no choice to call it off. Hopefully the weather eases ahead of tonight and we can get this important game played.
At Godalming, on Saturday, I was very pleased with the performance. Despite going a goal down we played some really good football and in the end I was disappointed not to win the game. In the second-half, especially, we really took the game to a strong, physical side and deserved at least a point from the game. After two poor performances last week the lads deserve great credit for the effort they put in.
We have a few injuries at the moment, which meant a few of the youngsters got their chance from the bench and none of them disappointed with Sam Conlon playing an important role in winning the penalty for us. They will get another chance tonight as Danny Lye, Tom Murphy and Matt Newman are all doubts whereas Nick Smith may be out for the rest of the season with a groin injury. Injuries have caused us problems all season but we just have to get on with it and make sure we work hard for each other. The lads are in confident mood after Saturday because it was a performance where we really rolled our sleeves up and got stuck-in against a very good side. Hopefully we can see more of the same tonight.
Worthing are undoubtedly a strong side and are up there battling for automatic promotion, so we have to match them in every department tonight. If it goes ahead the game will be played on a heavy pitch so it won’t be a game of attractive football, instead it will see two sides getting stuck-in whole-heartedly. The lads have been up for every game recently and especially after Monday’s postponement, they are really buzzing about this game tonight. It’s going to be a huge battle playing so many games over the next couple of weeks but the lads won’t give in and we are hoping for a bright end to the season. Please continue to make noise from the stands as it gives the lads that extra edge – you have been superb all season.
Thank you for your continued encouragement - it means a lot to the players and the management.
